Bring daylight through a pitched roof safely
A roof window should add light and ventilation without creating a weak point in the covering. We've completed Velux installation training and fitted five windows into one recent pitched roof. Before a Velux window installation in Northampton, we consider the roof angle, rafter spacing and the intended position inside the room. Window size affects both the opening and how it sits between or around structural members. Velux windows are designed for pitched roofs, so we distinguish this work from products made specifically for flat roofs. Good planning sets the window at a useful height while keeping the roof structure and covering details in view.

Flashing matched to the surrounding covering
We form the opening, fit the window and use the suitable flashing arrangement for the slate or tile around it. That flashing must collect water from above, carry it around the frame and return it safely onto the roof covering below. Accurate integration matters more than a neat frame indoors. We can fit Velux windows during new roofing, extension work or suitable alterations to an existing pitched roof. Planning them alongside wider roofing often makes access and surrounding details easier to coordinate. For existing roofs, we inspect the proposed position and covering before confirming what needs to be lifted and reinstated.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Velux window be fitted into a flat roof?
The work described here covers Velux windows designed for pitched roofs. Flat roofs use products and kerb details made for that application. We first identify the roof type and angle so the proposed window and flashing arrangement are suitable.
What decides where the roof window can go?
The room layout matters, but so do roof pitch, rafter spacing, covering type and the intended light or ventilation. We assess the proposed position from both inside and outside before planning the opening and surrounding roof work.
Can installation be combined with a new roof?
Yes. Fitting a suitable Velux window during new or extension roofing can make the opening, flashing and surrounding covering easier to coordinate. We can also install into an existing pitched roof where the structure and proposed position allow.
